Restricted Matters
Restricted Matters provide an additional layer of confidentiality within Cubed by Law Squared, ensuring that sensitive legal work is only visible to a tightly controlled group of users.
What is a Restricted Matter?
A Restricted Matter is a matter that has been explicitly locked down by a user with the Cubed General Counsel security role.
When a matter is restricted:
- It is only visible to:
- Users with the Cubed General Counsel role
- The Assigned Lawyer for the matter
- All other users are prevented from viewing or accessing the matter
This feature is typically used for highly sensitive legal matters such as executive issues, investigations, or confidential contractual work.
Restricting a Matter
Only users with the Cubed General Counsel role can restrict a matter.
To restrict a matter:
- Open the relevant matter
- Select Restrict from the action bar
- Confirm the action in the dialogue
Confirmation message:
“Access will be limited to the General Counsel and the assigned lawyer. Are you sure you want to proceed?”
Once confirmed, the matter is immediately restricted.
Identifying a Restricted Matter
When a matter has been restricted:

- A RESTRICTED label is displayed on the Matter View screen
- The matter remains accessible only to permitted users
- Other users will no longer see the matter in lists or searches
Behaviour changes for Restricted Matters
Restricted Matters introduce specific control rules:
-
Limited Visibility
Only General Counsel users and the Assigned Lawyer can access the matter
Assignment Lock
The Assigned Lawyer:
- ✅ Can continue working on the matter
- ❌ Cannot reassign the matter
-
Reassignment Control
Only users with the Cubed General Counsel role can reassign a restricted matter
Filtering Restricted Matters
On the Matter Grid, users can identify restricted matters using:
- The Restricted column (e.g. “Yes”)
- The Restricted filter toggle at the top of the grid
This allows eligible users to quickly locate restricted items.
Unrestricting a Matter
A restricted matter can be made visible again by a General Counsel user.
To unrestrict a matter:
- Open the restricted matter
- Select Unrestrict
- Confirm the action
Confirmation message:
“Removing the restriction will make this matter visible to all users. Are you sure you want to proceed?”
Once unrestricted:
- The matter becomes visible to all users again
- Normal permissions and behaviours are restored
Key Considerations
- Restricting a matter is immediate and enforced across the system
- Access is strictly limited; there is no partial visibility
- Assignment control shifts to General Counsel only
- Use this feature sparingly for genuinely sensitive matters
